Bill Shannon - Mayor – Cassowary Coast Regional Council


My name is Bill Shannon and I am the Mayor of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

I was first elected in 2008 on the basis of sound financial management and setting a strong foundation for our newly amalgamated Council. I led a Council that successfully integrated the separate administration systems of Cardwell and Johnstone shires; addressed the dire financial position of the region; substantially completed on time and on budget massive, much needed capital works; responded effectively to the challenges of recovery after Cyclone Yasi and kept rate increases to a minimum.

I am humbled to have been re-elected as one of only three mayors from amalgamated councils to have been returned in 2012 for a second term. 

With your help I can continue the important work of ensuring the financial sustainability of the Cassowary Coast Region; consolidating the achievements and gains of the past four years; continuing work towards equity in rating decisions and prudent use of rate payers funds; increasing efficiency and continuing to improve council’s practices, processes and decision making.

Effective disaster management and recovery procedures are of paramount importance. I will continue to work with the council and community to improve our level of preparedness, our safety measures and our communication, practices pre and post natural disasters.

I stand for accessibility; equality; open and consistent, reason based decision making; upholding the letter of the law; working with the highest standards of integrity and delivering value for ratepayers.

As your Mayor and with your support, we can continue to move forward, with each other, toward a stronger, prosperous and sustainable Cassowary Coast Region.
